Raekwon – “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, Pt. II” review

6 years after his 3rd album The Lex Diamond Story, Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon decided to make his 4th solo sequel to his solo debut Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… (which I think we can all agree is a cinematic masterpiece). The album features appearances from every single member of the group except for U-God along with State Property leader Beanie Sigel, The LOX minus Sheek Louch, former Leaders of the New School member Busta Rhymes, former G-Unit member The Game & Bun B formerly of UGK (although the latter 2 are only featured on the deluxe version). The production line-up is a total dream team as it contains beats from those such as RZA (who only produces 3 tracks on here rather than producing the whole thing like last time), DJ Premier protégé MoSS, True Master, Mathematics, blink-182 drummer Travis Barker (although he only remixes the track Penitentiary on the deluxe version), Erick Sermon, Necro, The Alchemist, Marley Marl, Pete Rock, Dr. Dre & even a few previously-unreleased J Dilla beats appear on here (although the ODB tribute track Ason Jones reuses the instrumental from Believe in God, a track off of a posthumous Dilla album called Jay Love Japan). As for the actual music on here, it is Rae’s most consistent & cohesive album since his debut 14 years prior. Lyrically, we’re still getting the same aggressive seriously delivered mafioso vibes that were all over the original OB4CL but it sounds more progressed rather than just a plain rehash. That actually goes for the production on here as well. This isn’t better than the original album, but it’s a damn-near perfect follow up that truly lives up to the hype as the original which not a lot of sequels tend to do

Score: 4.5/5
