A-F-R-O – “A-F-R-O Polo” review

After being hyped for the past couple years now, A-F-R-O (an acronym for All Flows Reach Out), the newest protégé of underground hip hop legend R.A. the Rugged Man, comes through with his first official project under Duck Down Music Inc. & it is entirely produced by Canadian hip hop producer Marco Polo. The EP is 8 tracks of great lyricism with his usual Gift of Gab inspired flow/delivery & vintage grimy boom bap production similar to DJ Premier’s. However, the track Sunshine & Flowers surprisingly has a beat & hook very similar to Snoop Dogg’s classic debut album Doggystyle & the beat on Use These Blues is smooth but A-F-R-O & Polo make it work. The EP’s sole guest appearances come from the homie Shylow of First Division doing scratches on the opener Long Time Coming, Organized Konfusion member Pharoahe Monch with a flawless guest verse on the track Swarm & Eamon singing a decent hook on the track Use These Blues. Overall, this is a very focused glimpse of what to expect from this kid in the future & a refreshing throwback to 90’s hip hop

Score: 4.5/5
