Che Noir & 7xvethegenius – “Desired Crowns” review

Buffalo, New York emcees Che Noir & 7xvethegenius joining forces for a collaborative full-length studio LP. One of whom blew up after 38 Spesh signed her to TCF Music Group & the other would sign with Conway the Machine’s own Drumwork Music Group, although they have since started their own labels Poetic Movement Records & Broadband Sound respectively. We’ve heard them cross paths with each other several times over the years, elevating their chemistry in part of their quest of their Desired Crowns.

After the “Trapped in the Silicone” intro, the first song “Topanga” produced by Lord Sear sets it all off with a soulful sample for both ladies to body for a few minutes whereas “Not Me” locks in with Chup so they can talk about going pound for pound. The 3rd & final single “Sum of 2 Evils” hooks up a crooning boom bap instrumental from Conductor Williams flexing that they could fit all the money everyone’s bragging of in their purses leading into “Amina” talking about making it because of survival.

Reason joins Che & 7xve on “Flight” recalling the best thing that their mothers told them was that the sky limit’s over a V Don beat & after the “Love You” interlude, Che Noir herself works in a soul sample during “Conquer” talking about making waves by following moves. “Town Ballroom” brings a dustier vibe thanks to Khrysis coaching shit ain’t funny despite them smiling while “Breaker” prior to the “Black Girl” remix ends with them in disbelief over the goals they’ve achieved.

Almost 4 years in the making, Desired Crowns progresses a chemistry that previous cuts like “Bless the Food” or “Neck Protected” have already captured previously except 2 of the illest women in Buffalo have grown a lot artistically throughout this ongoing decade & that’s a reoccurring reminder of this album now that they’re both doing their own thing. Appropriately, Che Noir & 7xvethegenius only have 1 guest to accompany them to put all their energy towards their synergetic bonds over a consistent batch of beats for nearly a half hour.

7xvethegenius – “Self 7xve 3” review

Buffalo, New York emcee 7xvethegenius making her debut under her Broadband Sound imprint’s new distribution deal with Roc Nation Records for her 3rd album. Emerging off her first 2 EPs The Calm Before & Self 7xve as well as the full-length debut 7xve is Love, it wasn’t until she & Jae Skeese both became the first artists to sign with Conway the Machine’s very own Drumwork Music Group where 7xve got her biggest break yet. She has since preluded Death of Deuce with Thy Will Be Done alongside Self 7xve 2 & most importantly the DJ Green Lantern-produced The Genius Tape, celebrating the 1-year anniversary of her final Drumwork opus this past weekend & looking to close out the Self 7xve trilogy 52 weeks later.

“Stay” produced by Haas Almahdi & S1 was a lush intro talking about having no care or fear & speaking God into her home before sleeping at night whereas “Twin” featuring Sol ChYld works in some pianos from CG confessing they’ve fallen in love again. “Price of Love” carries the keys over except the kicks & snares are replaced with hi-hats talking about paying the price of pain in exchange of affection leading into “You & Me” continuing the romantic subject matter contrasting her doing well & not so much for her partner from what she’s heard.

Haas reunites with 7xve & has Bricks da Mane co-produce my personal favorite of the 2 singles “Pedals” featuring Reuben Vincent questioning whether he truly loves her or not over a jazzy instrumental while the melodically cloudy “911” featuring Lil Sos reflects a relationship where their arguments weren’t ever merely between them. We later get some cool sampling chops on “Windows” talking about her beating the odds that were against her while “Worthy” featuring Flames dot Malik brings back the jazz thanks to Cartune Beatz teaching that it’s not love until you give some.

“Running” featuring Willyynova begins the 4th quarter of Self 7xve 3 talking about themes of escape over an EYEKETYSON instrumental while “Save Yourself” featuring Monie Love rivals the lead single for the best of the 5 collaborations forever going out their way to save themselves. “Survivor’s Remorse” hooks up more pianos to spit what she considers to possibly be the realest shit she’s ever written & “On My Own” ends the LP by talking about standing in the dust once the smoke has cleared.

Every chapter of the Self 7xve trilogy to me has it’s own level of significance when you think of the fact that the inaugural entry came out months prior to 7xvethegenius getting a label deal & the sequel came when she was halfway through her said previous contract. Of course I have to mention the last 2 installments both being extended plays & this being an actual album, marking a new era in her career under Roc Nation recalling true stories of her life with meticulous production in preparation of her & Che Noir’s long-awaited collaborative project a month from now.

7xvethegenius – “Death of Deuce” review

This is the long-awaited sophomore effort & final Drumwork Music Group offering from Buffalo, New York emcee 7xvethegenius. Emerging off her first 2 EPs The Calm Before & Self 7xve as well as the full-length debut 7xve is Love, it wasn’t until she & Jae Skeese both became the first artists to sign with Conway the Machine’s very own Drumwork imprint where 7xve got her biggest break yet. She has since preluded Death of Deuce with Thy Will Be Done alongside Self 7xve 2 & most importantly the DJ Green Lantern-produced The Genius Tape. Almost 4 years after being signed, it’s finally here.

“A Lesson” produced by !llmind is this cloudy trap opener assuring that things are only gonna get crazier as time passes by & to think wiser from this point forward whereas “Triangle” featuring Papoose soulfully talking about seeing $1M before she even made it as far as she has in the game. “Graymatter” hooks up a boom bap instrumental from the titular producer asking how you gonna buy your mom a house with street credit just before the jazzily dusty “Psalm” featuring Jae Skeese that Camoflauge Monk laced gets the hurt off 1 verse at a time.

The title track maintains a boom bap edge courtesy of EYEKETYSON showing off some crazy ass rhyme schemes for 107 seconds straight leading into “Dirty Nikes” gets back to the soul sampling talking about focusing more on her craft as of late. “Moma” heads for a luxurious direction thanks to STREETRUNNER expressing gratitude for making it onto without a spoon or a fork, but then “Deuce” strips the drums completely welcoming y’all to this beach chair.

“Authentic” takes the spacious boom bap route altogether talking about wanting to be herself while “The Genius” was my favorite single from the Daringer beat to 7xve’s lyricism cautioning to say no to drugs sticking with rapping so y’all can learn what love is. “Jump” has some more jazz rap undertones from Haas Almahdi maintaining the kicks & snares cautioning that you should look before you leap while the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League-assisted “Serious” flexes that she stay on top of their heads.

The penultimate song “Float” nears the end of Death of Deuce questioning God wanting to know when the first will be the last since she’s had her heart broken by these motherfuckers so many times keeping her head down focusing on work & lastly, “If I” closes the LP on some cloudy boom bap shit basically talking about if she were to pass away for roughly 5 & a half minutes.

Almost 4 years in the making & Death of Deuce begins a new era for the First Lady of Drumwork. I find myself leaning towards the production on The Genius Tape more in comparison but regardless, the elite lyricism & storytelling of that tape carries their way onto this album showing us how much she’s grown ever since Conway gave her a record deal.

Drumwork Music Group – “Drumwork: The Album” review

Drumwork Music Group is an independent hip hop record label based in Buffalo, New York founded by Conway the Machine in 2020 distributed by EMPIRE with Jae Skeese & 7xvethegenius as their first signings. La Maquina has since expanded the roster by bringing Goosebytheway, Lucky 7, SK da King & Shots Almigh all on board. So considering the squad is gradually growing, it only makes sense to conceive their very 1st showcase compilation.

“Hov Numbers” by Conway the Machine, Goosebytheway, Lucky 7, SK da King & 7xvethegenius is a 6 minute opener to the compilation with an airy trap instrumental from the label’s only in-house producer Unique declaring they’re still in their bag whereas “Lonely” by Jae Skeese, Lucky & SK dives right into boom bap turf sonically as the trio talk about getting it. “Lalo” by Conway featuring Benny the Butcher & 38 Spesh works in some woodwinds, kicks & snares from Graymatter as the trio discuss drug money leading into “City Grill” by Goose, Jae & 7xve has a slicker quality to the beat talking about how things get surprising because it’s mesmerizing.

“Rory Joint” by Jae Skeese & 7xvethegenius finds the label’s first 2 signings returning to the boom bap promising to leave y’all painted on some art shit just before Shots Almigh joins Jae & Goosebytheway for “Blue Glass” layering these kicks & snares on top of a vocal loop talking about having to get the bands to survive. “Take It Back” by Goose, Lucky 7, SK da King & 7xve has these crooning vocals in the background that I like with the 4 talking about throwing it back to the old days prior to “Elephant Man” by Conway the Machine, Goose, Heem, Rome Streetz & SK brings the quintet together over a cinematic boom bap beat admitting their minds are made up.

Goosebytheway, Jae Skeese, Lucky 7 & SK da King the final leg of the comp by linking up for “This is War” returns to a more soulful quality to the instrumental making it clear that none of them can be another casualty while the song “Crown for Queens” is an empowering 7xvethegenius solo cut about no one being able to stop her. The song “Andre 3000” by Conway the Machine & D Smoke goes into jazzier boom bap territory thanks to Bangladesh telling y’all to look how far they’ve been brought while the penultimate track “Sudan” by Con, Goose, Lo Profile & Shots Almigh intimidatingly talks about not playing around where they’re from. “Far Away” by Con & Elcamino is a minimally produced closer with Beat Butcha behind the boards discussing the game they play.

I’m sure we’re gonna get more showcase comps from the Drumwork camp in the near future, but their first over here definitely makes it seem like that it’s only the beginning of their dominance. The production’s tight, the features from their affiliates/outside collaborators are all well picked out & each artist on the label’s current roster all have their own distinctive characteristics that they each display with the hunger that continues to grow from within everyone.

7xvethegenius – “The Genius Tape” review

7xvethegenius is a 33 year old MC from Buffalo, New York emerging off her first 2 EPs The Calm Before & Self 7xve as well as the full-length debut 7xve is Love. However, it wasn’t until she & Jae Skeese both became the first artists to sign with Conway the Machine’s very own EMPIRE Distribution imprint Drumwork Music Group where 7xve got her biggest break yet. She has since preluded her sophomore album albeit Drumwork debut Death of Deuce with Thy Will Be Done & Self 7xve 2, but is teaming up with DJ Green Lantern for her debut mixtape.

“Meditation” is a spacious opener to the tape reminding that she’s the illest bitch out here today whereas “Biddy Mason” goes into shimmery boom bap turf talking about being right here with this army behind her for those trying to disarm her. “Back End Developer” gives off an uncannier vibe saying it’s time for her to talk her shit on these records that is until “Brainstorming” featuring Conway the Machine finds the pair strategizing on top of some chilling background vocals.

After the “AA Speaks” interlude, “Brain Food” dives into quirkier turf sonically so 7xve can tell everyone to look at who she was then & who she is now today just before “The Feel” gives off an atmospheric edge this time around talking about trying to show love. The song “Lost on Mars” is a desponding ballad of a man that loves the streets more than her while the penultimate track “Moon Walk” featuring T.F. returns to the boom bap pulling up as if they were surfing, but then “Neck Protected” featuring Che Noir & Rome Streetz ends the tape some pianos hooked up to kicks & snares as all 3 of them can deliver lyrical annihilation. I also really like the nod to “Da Rockwilder” during the hook too.

For a mixtape preluding her upcoming sophomore full-length effort, The Genius Tape has to be my favorite 7xve project to date & I can only imagine Death of Deuce taking it up a few levels whenever the time comes. She’s already proven to be one of the most skilled females in recent memory, but DJ Green Lantern’s production is more consistent than her last 2 EPs with all respect & the features are all well picked out.

7xvethegenius – “Self 7xve 2” review

This is the 5th EP from Buffalo emcee 7xvethegenius. Breaking out a couple years ago off her first 2 EPs The Calm Before & Self 7xve as well as the full-length debut 7xve is Love, it wasn’t until she & Jae Skeese both became the first artists to sign with Conway the Machine’s very own EMPIRE Distribution imprint Drumwork Music Group where 7xve got her biggest break yet. Last we heard from her was over the summer when he dropped Thy Will Be Done during my first night at last year’s Gathering of the Juggalos & now in light of Skeese dropping his Big Ghost Ltd.-produced magnum opus Authenticity Check a little over a week ago, 7xve is stepping up to the plate with Self 7xve 2.

“Waves” kicks off the EP by cinematically talking about how crazy her life’s been up to this point whereas the bassy, yet flute-tinged “Affluence” follows it up by declaring that she’s cut from a different cloth. Trae tha Truth tags along for the wavy “Always Thank God” encouraging listeners to give their praise to the higher power, but then “Fluidity” brings back to the woodwinds thanks to EYEKETYSON to bring the smoke.

The song “Forecast” with Flee Lord sees the pair over some boom bap production from JR Swiftz advising to stay true to the game while the penultimate track “Back End” works in some jazzy undertones talking about fucking shit up with her partner. “Moxie” then ends the EP with a somber piano ballad putting her life up to this point on wax.

Of all the sequel projects in hip hop that have lived up to the hype set by the predecessor or even surpassed it, you can definitely add Self 7xve 2 onto that list. I really admire how she decided take it back to basics & enhance everything that I liked about the first one. Most notably also, the inclusion of features was actually a really nice move as they bring their on flavor to the tracklist.

7xvethegenius – “Thy Will Be Done” review

7xvethegenius is a 31 year old MC from Buffalo, New York breaking out a couple years ago off her debut EP The Calm Before & the full-length album 7xve is Love. This was followed up with the Self 7xve EP & then this past winter, she & Jae Skeese both became the first artists that Conway the Machine would sign to his newly formed Drumwork Music Group. Now since 7xve’s sophomore album albeit Drumwork debut Death of Deuce on the way, she’s preluding it by dropping her 3rd EP.

“Tunechi” is a trap-flavored opener produced by Chup with 7xve & Armani Caesar telling motherfuckers to ask about them whereas “Payback” has an atmospheric boom bap tone thanks to EYEKETYSON speaking on her family. “Roses” goes into jazz territory addressing her lover just before “Marching” returns to that trap sound talking her shit.

The song “Psalm” with Jae Skeese takes it back into jazz turf with the help of Camoflauge Monk saying they out their lives on wax while the penultimate track “If I” with Heem meditatively tells the good they can be anything. Finally, the closer “Bailey Ave” luxuriously pays homage to the street that she came up from.

I feel like this chick has only been getting better within the last 8 months or so. Everything from 7xve’s songwriting to the production choices have improved significantly in comparison to her previous efforts. At this rate, Death of Deuce could very well be her best work yet.
