Gloom Unit – “House of Gloom” review

West coast horrorcore duo the Gloom Unit consisting of Acetone Boogie & Frankie Goldie finally making their full-length debut. One of whom comes straight out of Tucson, Arizona & the other representing Sin City Las Vegas, Nevada respectively as part of the Swamp Society collective. They would properly introduce themselves as a pairing on New Year’s Day 2024 with the debut extended play Come Heavy produced by Chapter 17/Psychopathic Records in-house producer Devereaux, who would also produce the sequel Mo Heavy. A little over a year later, they’re taking us inside the House of Gloom almost a week after J-Rod ended Alice Crowley’s record-breaking 2nd reign as JCW Women’s Champion.

After the intro, the title track produced by none other than Devereaux brings an organ-laced trap beat into the picture advising to say your prayers because of the demonic shit they’re about to do whereas “Murda Gloves” goes for a morbidly slower vibe to the beat discussing the topic of murder itself. “Gloomhauer” works in some strings to talk about giving 0 fucks regarding the repercussions of them constantly killing it while “DaEyes” acknowledges their imperfections although they’re very much trying.

“RedDedRedemption” continues from there talking about watching bodies burning in The Wraith’s exhibition of Hell’s Pit leading into “No Shoulders” incorporates some sampling techniques flexing that they’ll still be carrying firearms on them when winding up in Shangri-La in the end. “Stomp ‘Em Out” featuring Darby O’Trill joins forces for an angrily cutthroat hardcore hip hop banger while “All Dead” talks about not being the type who enjoy cheap thrills.

Ending the 1st half, “Bouncing Off da Concrete” hooks up some predominant horns during the hook boasting the credentials they’ve already had out in the streets & this being normal to them while “Daishin Folklore” gives a backstory behind the Unit’s mascot who can be seen on the artwork of all their projects. “Less Than Gold” talks about earning everything they have & none of it being handed out for free while “Headbussas” featuring Donnie Menace succeeding at going full trap metal.

“Zim Dem” featuring PERCYBONES finds the trio asking everyone who doubted them how they like them now & fighting for survival since Day 1 while “Taking Out the Trash at Night” talks about coming alive right when the sun goes down. “Disclaimer” featuring 8corpses links up to provide advice that you shouldn’t ever take & something they feel like everyone should know while “Selena” featuring Sagan Ummo brings out a fully loaded chopper over a trap instrumental with bells.

The sample right from the start of “Don’t Close Ya Eyes” immediately drew me in talking about not falling asleep for the purpose of demons who tend to watch us in the late night hours & view our souls as food prior to the outro, “Isolation” spends the last 3 & a half minutes sitting in the House of Gloom all alone admitting that they’ve been following darkness their whole entire lives as well as coming to terms that neither of them feel like anyone’s out there.

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if our minds turned against us & the walls of what was initially designed to protect us isolates each other from the outside world, the House of Gloom will give the answer one seeks right when the doors lock shut to commence an evil dream hosted by demons constructed by our fears & whatever emotion it is we try to hide over some of Devereaux’s darkest production accompanied by a few of the underground wicked shit scene’s finest presently.

Gloom Unit – “Come Heavy II: Mo Heavy” review

This is the 2nd EP from west coast horrorcore duo the Gloom Unit consisting of Acetone Boogie & Frankie Goldie. One of whom comes straight out of Tucson, Arizona & the other representing Sin City Las Vegas, Nevada respectively as part of the Swamp Society collective. Acetone’s been putting it down for the underground for over a decade at this point putting out a total of 3 solo LPs as of me writing this review & Frankie has been establishing himself artistically by doing a couple features & even releasing 2 solo singles. Come Heavy last New Year’s Day produced by Devereaux was a phat introduction to the unit & are returning 12 months later unloading Mo Heavy.

After the “Mo Heavy” intro, the first song “Money Makin’” is a dark-synth trap opener telling everyone to move out the way so they can get to the bread whereas “Honey Berry” takes a tropical trap vibe to the beat getting on their Gloom type shit. “D.M.M.D.I. (Devil Made Me Do It)” heads for a cloudier direction asking for people to check their shit in since they need it leading into “Denzel” calling for the roof to burn.

“No Sleep” continues the other half of Come Heavy II: Mo Heavy by Frankie Goldie atmospherically gettin’ on his count-up shit while “Raindance” manically declares that the Unit be running every piece of the underground at this point. “This is How It Endz” wraps up the duo’s 2nd EP with an Acetone Boogie solo cut that he dropped last spring by working in some sampling walking alone under the moonlight.

Over a whole year since Come Heavy marked their introduction to the the world, the Gloom Unit are back with another EP carrying over every single thing that made it’s predecessor a fun New Year’s listen as Devereaux expands on their dark trap sound in favor of drawing inspiration from cloud rap to the Memphis scene & both MCs leveling up their chemistry after a whole 54 weeks.

Frankie Goldie – “Vegas Winter: Jugg Motivation 101” review

Las Vegas, Nevada emcee Frankie Goldie of the Swamp Society collective & the duo Gloom Unit alongside Acetone Boogie releasing his full-length debut. For about a year & a half now, he’s been establishing himself as an artist within the underground wicked shit scene whether it be 7 solo singles or the Gloom Unit’s debut EP Come Heavy produced by Devereaux arriving on New Year’s Day to high reception from the juggalos. But after teasing Vegas Winter: Jugg Motivation 101 for next week, Frankie has decided to let Christmas come early.

After the “JM101” intro, the first song “CAKEWALK” begins with Devereaux who produced the entire LP working in strings along with bells & hi-hats talking about throwing money in the circle like it’s a seance whereas the lead single “RAWKZOFF” instrumentally gives me a bit of a Memphis rap vibe (i.e. One of my favorite groups Three 6 Mafia) coming to get his rocks off. “CODE BLACK” featuring Donnie Menace finds the 2 talking about being cold blooded killers over a morbid trap beat, but then “Rollie” exultantly lets y’all know it’s that time.

“CAVIAR DREAMS” featuring Darby O’Trill is a jazz/trap fusion getting that bloody money just before “BRIXINDASAFE” goes for a cloudier atmosphere refusing to behave since he stuck in his ways. “KATANA” featuring Kold-Blooded returns to a darker trap sound looking to slicing necks with the titular sword while “Lemon Drizzle” is a fun club banger about sippin’ dirty Gatorade without giving a fuck what a hater has to say. Another standout “BULLETPROOF COUPE” turns up the aggression mixing Faygo with Grey Goose & having the digiscale tippin’ on ‘em prior to the 6-minute “BIGMANEONDABLOCK” fusing trap, jazz rap & soul so he can count his digits.

Vegas Winter: Jugg Motivation 101 much like Come Heavy is living proof that the Swamp Society is a force to be reckoned with in the underground except JM101 will give you a better idea as to who Frankie is artistically & personally. He shows his influences from the Insane Clown Posse & Esham to the Triple 6 Mafia, Jeezy, Future & Lil Ugly Mane on top of Devereaux continuing to evolve as a producer throwing additional elements of jazz, soul & influences from the Memphis scene into his signature trap sound here.

But after coming together in the fall & preluding their debut EP in the form of a few singles, Acetone & Frankie are looking to Come Heavy by properly introducing themselves to kick off the new year with Chapter 17/Psychopathic Records in-house producer Devereaux behind the boards start to finish.

After the intro, the first song “Anna in da Attic” is an occult trap opener paying homage to the Insane Clown Posse’s best storytelling track ridin’ dirty with the chromes “Amy’s in the Attic” whereas “Blood on My Chucks” instrumentally gives off more of a west coast vibe to spit the wicked shit with the bells calling back to “Real G Shit” off of Blaze Ya Dead Homie’s self-titled debut EP & I just wanna say I mean that as a compliment. “Dead Ringer” shifts back into trap turf trying to figure out why they hatin’ just before “Bury da Bones” works in some pianos & hi-hats talking about how no one else like them. “LeanGutt” then closes out the EP on a triumphant trap note with elements of chopped & screwed dedicated to the thuggalos.

These guys have only been getting better with each single they’ve been giving us, so it was more than enough to convince me that Come Heavy was gonna be a promising introduction to who the Gloom Unit really is. Now that we finally got their debut EP to start 2024, it should absolutely please the juggalos & maybe even some G*59 fans too. Devereaux’s production is chiefly trap-oriented with additional elements of west coast hip hop or even chopped & screwed mixed in leaving it up to both Acetone Boogie & Frankie Goldie to further hone in their chemistry.
