Young Nudy – “Paradise” review

Here is the 4th studio LP from Atlanta, Georgia rapper Young Nudy. Although he & 21 Savage are cousins, he eventually carved a lane of his own in the last decade with 10 mixtapes (the most notable ones being the Pi’erre Bourne-produced Sli’merre & it’s sequel) followed by his previous 3 full-lengths. I heard at some point last fall when Sli’merre 2 came out that Nudy had an album fully produced by Metro Boomin’ coming down the pipe but regardless when or if that happens, he’s taking us on a trip to Paradise.

“17” made for a cloudy intro produced by Kid Hazel talking about his young shooter layin’ bodies out whereas “What’s Happenin’?” featuring Latto finds the 2 pairing up over a Coupe instrumental so they can stay turnt in the club. “Pull Up” works in some strings & hi-hats for a homage to “Throw Some D’s” by Rich Boyleading into the Atlanta bass strip club heater “B.T.A. (Bounce That Ass)”.

The title track finds himself in the middle of a block party getting back on the trap vibes with some horns added to the equation just before “GOAT” bombastically talks about not wanting smoke with him at all. “Big Bad Wolf” featuring BabyDrill has a quirkier drill sound to it likening themselves to a pack of wolves while “Super Slime” talks about a woman falling in love with him because he ain’t no scrub.

21 Savage joins his cousin to make the Memphis rap banger “Iced Tea” basically saying you don’t get to eat if you don’t hustle while “Sugar” combines these pianos & hi-hats likening himself to Tony Montana of Scarface. “Mop Stick” has an eerier trap flare to it expressing is dislike for people cappin’ in their raps while “Snake” talks about the needing to clean up the streets & watch out for any rats.

“Chains On” nears Paradise’s final minutes to show off the ice around his neck over a trap beat with some vibraphones not having to flex shit because the girl he’s currently seeing is already well aware of him making money while “4 God” properly ties up our journey in Nudy’s Paradisewith some 808s & ominous synthesizers promising to put anyone who goes against him on a white tee shirt only driving fast.

Young Nudy & Coupe have crossed paths with one another countless times in the past already, using half of Anyways… or a great deal of both DR. EV4L & Gumbo as examples. Point is: The unique chemistry they’ve always had together still makes for a fun listening experience whether it be the trap, cloud rap, Memphis rap, pop rap, dirty south & rage production or Nudy’s explicitly gangsta approach to his songwriting.

Young Nudy – “Sli’merre 2” review

Atlanta, Georgia rapper Young Nudy back for his 10th mixtape. Despite being cousins with 21 Savage, he eventually carved a lane of his own in the last decade with his last 9 mixtapes (the most notable one being the Pi’erre Bourne-produced Sli’merre) & 3 full-lengths. Rich Shooter & EA Monster were the last projects of his that I covered, coming off Gumbo from a year & a half to reunite with Pi’erre for the highly awaited Sli’merre 2 ahead of his next album fully produced by Metro Boomin’.

“Come to My World” is this syrupy trap intro talking about Nudy being way too geeked up as it is whereas “Get Fucked Up” works in some synthesizers & hi-hats once again not shying away from making it known that he’s under the influence. “Money” pushes forward with an uncanny trap atmosphere instrumentally stacking his bread all the way up to the ceiling prior to “I’m Big Dawg” hookin’ the synths back up in order for him to flex his current status in the rap game.

Moving on from there, “Breakdown” kinda has this bubbly trap flare to the beat talking about doing shakedowns taking everything since he’s #1 & everyone else is right behind him just before “Bang Pistols” pulls a bit from the plugg scene showing off his mob ties. “Loaded” is another synthesizer-heavy trap joint boasting that he’s sitting on millions leading into “Splash” sampling “NEVEREVER” by Destroy Lonely addressing the theme of lust.

“10pc Teriyaki” kicks off the 2nd half of Sli’merre 2 on a playful tip maintaining a synth-trap edge talking about being a star in the subgenre & smiling at his opps while “Gotta Salute” flexing that his clique remains bulletproof on top of broke muhfuckas being unable to do what he does. The prominent woodwinds throughout “Save Myself” featuring BabyDrill are a uniquely distinct touch getting on their gangsta shit referencing current AEW performer & commentator as well as former 7-time WWE world champion, 11-time WWE Tag Team Champion, WWE Intercontinental Champion, WWE United States Champion & 3-time WWE Hardcore Champion Paul Wight while “4Slime” cloudily talks being a stone cold killer.

Meanwhile on “Bloody”, we have Nudy beginning the final leg of the tape by cautioning that he’ll shut down your trap the second he pulls up speaking the truth on wax since it’s beyond rap while the synthesizer-driven “Hakuna Matata” gets down & dirty. The lead single “Right Now” remains in the trap house tryna beat it ’til it down & finally, “How It Be” ends with more synths telling everyone who ain’t getting money to get the fuck off his dick.

Over 5 years since the original, Sli’merre 2 recaptures the essence of what made Sli’merre the best mixtape in Nudy’s catalog since Nudy Land & joins it’s predecessor as one of the most essential bodies of work in his catalog. Granted you can never go wrong with Pi’erre’s 1-of-a-kind production style top to bottom, but I most importantly appreciate the fact Nudy got lesser guests than he did last time he did a tape with Pi’erre & mostly held it on his own.

Young Nudy – “EA Monster” review

This is the 9th mixtape from Atlanta, Georgia rapper Young Nudy. Despite being cousins with 21 Savage, he eventually carved a lane of his own in the last 8 years with his last 8 mixtapes (the most notable one being the Pi’erre Bourne-produced Sli’merre) & 2 full-lengths. Rich Shooter just celebrated it’s 1-year anniversary a few days ago & Nudy’s re-emerging in the form of EA Monster.

“Nun to Do” is a bassy opener describing being spaced the fuck out whereas “KitKat” works in some quirky synths thanks to Pi’erre talking about having deadly assassins. “Impala” takes a ghoulish route for him & his homie to creep in his whip, but then “Fresh as Fuck” brings back the synths warning that you don’t want no smoke with him.

Meanwhile on “Lunch Meat”, we have Nudy over a cloudy instrumental talking about being a stepper leading into the solemn yet rubbery 4L anthem “My Gang”. The delicate synths throughout “No Chaser” are a nice touch talking about itching for a body just before “Ready” shoots for a moodier aesthetic to deliver an ode for all of those who like to get high.

The song “Sick of Slime” lividly calls out every single dick rider he knows while the penultimate track “Duntsane” wasn’t the best choice for a single in my personal opinion despite the gangsta rap themes & the beat that Coupe brings to the table. Primarily because I personally felt that Baby Drill’s performances compared to Nudy’s was underwhelming. “Project X” however sends the tape with a rowdy fight anthem not for the bitch made.

Nudy had always been consistent throughout the course of his career & EA Monster further cements his status as such in my eyes. He delivers some animated performances/sticky songwriting throughout, I like how he toned it down with the features compared to Rich Shooter & the production is a healthy mix of Coupe & Pi’erre’s respectively unique sounds much like his last tape was.

Young Nudy – “DR. EV4L” review

Young Nudy is a 28 year old rapper from Atlanta, Georgia notable for being cousins with 21 Savage. Ever since coming up together in 2016, the cat released a total of 6 mixtapes (the most notable one being the Pi’erre Bourne-produced Sli’merre) before putting out his full-length debut Anyways just a little over a year ago. But as summer approaches next month, Nudy is following it up by dropping his highly anticipated sophomore album.

“Revenge” kicks things off with an ominous, bass-heavy instrumental from Coupe (who produced all but 5 joints on the album) & Young Nudy exposing someone for trickin’ people out their cash, but then “Mini Me” is essentially about sending youngins to pull a shootout & I like how they sample “Black Butterfly” by Deniece Williams. Meanwhile on “Yellow Tape”, we have Lil Uzi Vert coming into fold as he & Nudy jump on a cloudy beat from 20 Rocket saying they have murder on their minds before trying to find “the reason why the fuck your folks ain’t breathin’” on the synth-laced “Roughneck”.

The song “Perc 30” has a more hypnotic tone instrumentally as Young Nudy proclaims himself as a rich shooter whereas “The Rustlers” goes into a more braggadocious direction lyrically with the production from Mojo & Bavier having a spectral feel to it. “Child’s Play” with 21 Savage is a cool lil homage to the horror movie franchise of the same name despite the comatose beat, but then he admits that he “doesn’t like to beef with pussies” if he “ain’t got no reason” on the minimally-produced “Soul Keeper”. I thought “2Face” was a good choice for a single leading up to the album because or perfectly lives up to it’s name with the instrumental switch-up during the 2nd half along with Nudy & G Herbo’s lyrics about being famous yet reckless.

The nocturnal beat on “Scott Evil” is pretty dope as are the lyrics about how he “don’t need nobody squeeze for me” before asking for smoke on the glum-sounding title track. The penultimate track “Colombian Necktie” is pretty much a ruthless 4-minute freestyle about slitting throats & finally, the closer “Walking Dead” is basically Young Nudy going on about how he’s seen it all & I almost wanna say the instrumental almost goes into a more dungeon synth sound which is pretty cool.

It’s pretty safe to say that DR. EV4L is easily Nudy’s darkest body of work yet. Throughout the 45 minute runtime, the songwriting borderlines horrorcore at some points & Coupe could possibly become trap’s next big producer because his contributions to the production-end of the album ties into it’s theme more.
