Geese is an indie rock band from Brooklyn, New York comprised of drummer Max Bassin, guitarist Emily Green, bassist Dominic DiGesu & frontman/keyboardist Cameron Winter. Their 2021 full-length studio debut A Beautiful Memory was received moderately & the sophomore effort Projector saw some significant improvements in comparison, coming off their most widely praised statement yet 3D Country to have Greenwich, Connecticut producer Kenny Beats solely handling the production for their 4th studio LP.
The lead single “Trinidad” blends experimental rock, art punk, psychedelic rock, punk blues, noise rock, dub, krautrock, blues rock, acid rock, jazz-rock & free funk for an intro inspired by Yasin Abu Bakr whereas “Cobra” works in a flute to sing about a lover enticing the other. “Husbands” shifts towards an alternative country vibe in terms of sound depicting a relationship between the lead singer of a band & a fan just before “Getting Killed” looks at his struggles as insignificant compared to the worse things people are going through.
“Islands of Men” comes through with a power ballad stemming from Emily Green’s transition leading into “100 Horses” fusing blues rock, indie rock, funk rock, psychedelic rock, punk blues, swamp rock, art punk, art rock, country rock & roots rock to discuss people being kept ignorant from the horrors of war. “Half Real” kicks off the 2nd leg of Getting Killed singing about requiring proof of love in a relationship while “Au Pays du Cocaine” combines elements of indie rock, soft rock & roots rock breaking down a relationship where 1 partner’s dependent on the other.
“Bow Down” winds down the last few moments of Getting Killed explaining the tension between yielding & resisting while the lead single “Taxes”explores indie rock, art rock, neo-psychedelia, jangle pop, heartland rock & post-britpop singing about someone plagued with guilt who decides to turn inward & reject the world around them choosing between wallowing in their pity or work towards improving themselves. “Long Island City, Here I Come” sends off the LP embracing the inevitable end during the final 7 minutes or so.
3D Country has been widely hailed as the most essential listening experience in the Geese catalog, but Getting Killed really takes them to newer heights. Kenny Beats’ indie rock, art rock, psychedelic rock, blues rock, art punk, krautrock, roots rock, experimental rock, punk blues, noise rock, dub, krautrock, acid rock, jazz-rock, free funk, blues rock, funk rock, swamp rock, country rock, roots rock, neo-psychedelia, jangle pop, heartland rock & post-britpop masterfully expands the quartet’s sound exploring themes of violence, power & transformation using surreal imagery.
