Terror Reid – “Manifesto” review

San Jose deejay, producer, rapper & actor Terror Reid celebrating the 1-year anniversary of Hot Vodka 2 with his 2nd mixtape. Originally started turning heads a decade back after dubstep pioneer Skrillex signed him to his OWSLA Music for short period of time, he went on to drop 2 full-lengths & 13 EPs in the EDM genre under the name Getter before embarking into hip hop during the pandemic with Hot Vodka, which my homie Rone Bone of The Beneath the Dirt Podcast put me onto when it came out & was impressed by the boom bap/g-funk production as well as the raps from Terror himself. The sophomore EP DYNAMO as was the previously mentioned ruined Hot Vodka sequel, so I was anticipating his Manifesto.

After the “Salvation” intro, the first song “Makin’ Me Sick!” instrumentally throws it back to the days of early 90s west coast hip hop expressing his disgust with some of these cats whereas “Chin Check” takes a significantly eerier route to the beat talking about saying less & asking what’s next since he did everything else. “Shark City” embraces the g-funk vibes representing his hometown where the Sharks play while “Mad Woozy” goes drumless giving a middle finger to the fame & wanting to commit murder referencing Facebook founder/Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

“Seraphim” morbidly flexes that suckas can never get close to the phantom just before the lead single “Nod Ya Head! takes it back to the basement on a ride to raise Hell promising to kill any mic given to him. “Doin’ My Thang” maintains his independent hustle over this groovy ass instrumental leading into “I.D.F.A. (I Don’t Fuck Around)” dustily talks about not playing games whatsoever.

The penultimate song “Waco” featuring Rocci pushes towards the conclusion of the Manifesto of Terror Reid on some eerie trap shit referencing when the Branch Davidians were sieged by U.S. federal government & Texas state law enforcement officials while “Want U Around” ahead of the “Departure” outro wrapping things up expressing that he feels like he’s running in the dark with a blindfold on.

Rocci who produced Ramirez’ best album to date The Playa$ Manual in the spring of 2020 right when the COVID-19 pandemic started had his hand in producing 7 of the 10 songs on here excluding the intro & outro skit, which is important to note because this might be my new favorite Terror Reid tape. The Virginia producer helps Getter grow his sound & refining his style as an MC.

Score: 4/5

Terror Reid – “Hot Vodka 2” review

This is the debut mixtape from San Jose deejay, producer, rapper & actor Terror Reid. This was followed up with the sophomore EP DYNAMO & now after teaming up with Pouya to on the collab EP Chrome Casketz few weeks ago, Terror Reid is back in effect to deliver a sequel to his debut EP.

After the intro, the first song “Run It Back” starts the tape getting in his shit-talking bag over some kicks & snares whereas “Babe Ruthless” featuring Lu is a sick boom bap/g-funk crossover talking about exactly how they do it. “Tha Jackpot” fuses a crooning loop with more kicks & snares admitting that he feels like a God, but then “Daz My Bitch” shifts into a feel-good ballad dedicated to the woman of his life.

“Stay Dipped” featuring Domsta has a somber g-funk vibe reminding us all these hoes ain’t shit leading into “Hasselhoff” going for a more symphonic trap turn references WWE Hall of Famer, former 6-time WWE Champion, 2-time WWE Intercontinental Champion, 2-time WWE United States Champion, 5-time WWE Tag Team Champion & NWA World Tag Team Champion Stone Cold Steve Austin. “Dis Substance” takes the psychedelically cloudy route of course discussing drug use just before the guitar-driven “Medicine (Tha Cycle)” singing about a cycle that had ended.

The song “Comatoze” has a woozier vibe instrumentally promising to rob any poser of their green for doing simply that while the penultimate track “1st Blood” shoots for a dreamier boom bap groove profoundly spitting words of wisdom. Pouya saves the tape’s best feature for last on the grueling closer “No Gimmix” much like on the original Hot Vodka itself matching the energy they captured on Chrome Casketz only 3 weeks earlier referencing WWE Hall of Famer Mike Tyson.

If you loved the boom bap/g-funk fusions that Terror Reid has become known for, you should come away from Hot Vodka 2 liking it as much if not more than the original EP that introduced us all to him during a retrospectively weird time. The production expands on the sounds of the predecessor & I love how he focused more on himself as a performer by having the same amount of features albeit focusing more on himself as an MC instead of leaving it half solo cuts, half features.

Terror Reid – “DYNAMO” review

Terror Reid is a 29 year old DJ, producer, rapper & actor from San Jose, California who originally started turning heads a decade back after dubstep pioneer Skrillex signed him to his OWSLA Music for short period of time. He went on to drop 2 full-lengths & 13 EPs in the EDM genre under the name Getter before embarking into hip hop during the pandemic with Hot Vodka, which my homie Rone Bone of The Beneath the Dirt Podcast put me onto when it came out & was impressed by the boom bap/g-funk production as well as the raps from Terror himself. Considering that, I was excited to hear that we were getting a 2nd EP from him in this style.

“STAY BACK! (VOODOO SHIT)” is a fuzzy boom bap opener talking about how he can’t be fucked with whereas “SAV IT UP (LIZARD PEOPLE) works in a drumless sample to advise not letting the door getcha. The song “ACTIN’ OUT” goes full-blown g-funk even tough YVNCC’s verse isn’t all that great going into detail about hoes trippin’ while the penultimate track “AIN’T NOTHIN’” returns to the boom bap providing motivation for the listeners encouraging to find their way calling himself rap’s answer to WWE Hall of Famer, 7-time world champion, 7-time tag team champion & WWE Hardcore Champion The Undertaker. “OUT DA CUT (4EVA)” closes the EP by fusing synths & dusty drums talking about never giving a fuck.

In my opinion, DYNAMO is most definitely the most I’ve enjoyed a Terror Reid to date I’m happy Getter toned down the number of features compared to his last EP, his MCing skills are improving & I respect the mix of styles in his production that range from East Coast boom bap to West Coast g-funk & even drumless.
